The date and time should be set as well in order to avoid this error. It should be set automatically so that the error itself won’t occur in first place. To update the date and time, go to Settings>General>Date & Time and tap on the switch Set Automatically to ON.
The internet connection also matters a lot when it comes to this particular iMessage not working error. If you get the said error, then immediately check the internet connection to your device. Poor internet connections may also lead to such errors. iMessage may not work properly if the internet connection is poor. To set it go to Settings>Wi-Fi/Cellular>Turn off the switch.
